L-Arginine is an amino acid that does a number of things in the body like supporting our immune systems and helping wounds heal faster. It is also of interest to body builders because it elevates the secretion of insulin and growth hormone which are known for their muscle building and fat loss properties.

L-Arginine, Nitric Oxide and the Male Reproductive System

Many athletes and body builders have heard of the popular supplement Nitric Oxide. There is ample scientific evidence showing that Nitric Oxide increases blood flow in the body. This is of particular interest to bodybuilders because increased blood flow delivers more nutrients to muscles, thus helping them become larger when subject to stress.  What is less well known is the fact Nitric Oxide is a gas that is produced when enzymes in the body breakdown L-Arginine. By increasing your L-Arginine intake you will boost your levels of Nitric Oxide and therefore get the benefits of this excellent supplement at the same time.

L-Arginine also has an important role in fertility. Not only do high levels of L-Arginine help with sperm and semen production but it also assists with the general health and mobility of sperm cells.

L-Arginine is also used for erectile dysfunction. Like the drug Viagra, L-Arginine is thought to enhance the action of nitric oxide, which relaxes muscles surrounding blood vessels supplying the penis. As a result, blood vessels in the penis dilate, increasing blood flow, which helps maintain an erection. The popular erectile dysfunction drug sildenafil citrate contains Nitric Oxide and it is common to refer to this gas, which is derived from L-Arginine, as a “natural Viagra”.

L-Arginine and Growth Hormone Production

L-Arginine is involved in the production of human growth hormone, making it useful in those who want to build and tone muscle tissue as well as metabolise stored fat. Higher levels of growth hormone after exercise boost recovery rates from training. Supplemental doses of L-Arginine assist in the proper production of insulin. Insulin in turn works to maintain proper blood sugar levels and allows a better tolerance of glucose. Proper control of blood sugar levels is essential when trying to lose body fat.

L-Arginine and the Immune System

The immune system uses nitric oxide, derived from L-Arginine, in fighting viral, bacterial and parasitic infections, and tumors. Nitric oxide transmits messages between nerve cells and is associated with the process of learning, memory, sleeping, feeling pain, and, probably depression. The production of T-lymphocytes from the thymus gland is boosted by higher levels of L-Arginine. These important T-Cells are what defend us from many viral infections including colds and influenza. L-Arginine is also indicated in the early stages of HIV treatment as a booster to the immune system.

L-Arginine, Energy Production and Creatine

L- Arginine has an essential role in maintaining cellular energy. It does this by combining with Glycine and L-Methionine to form Creatine. Creatine assists with the energy production associated with muscle contraction and expansion. Creatine allows the levels of ATP (our energy currency) to stay high. Many athletes and body builders combine supplemental L-Arginine with their Creatine doses.

The normal dietary sources of L-Arginine include dairy products, meat, chicken and fish. Legumes, whole grains, nuts and chocolate also contain L-Arginine.

If you are exercising regularly and hoping to lose fat and gain muscle it is difficult to get sufficient quantities from these food sources alone and in order to experience some of the benefits of L-Arginine additional quantities should be consumed.

The most effective method is to take L-Arginine in powder form. It is water soluble and may be added to any fluid or post training protein shake.

When taking L-Arginine for training recovery, it is best to have one 5g dose after training and another 5g dose just before bed.
